Coaches Kolaches. Des Moines, IA.

There have been many important innovations in the realm of egg portability. The breakfast sandwich was a good first step, but one runny yolk and you’re done for. Breakfast burritos are well-contained, but are often a two-handed eating affair. Thank goodness some higher power loves us and wants us to be happy (and able to eat eggs while we’re driving) and bestowed on us the fabulous kolache. If you’re unfamiliar, a kolache is a yeast bun filled with either sweet or savory fillings. And the kolaches at Coaches are pure bliss every time. I always order the sausage, egg, and cheese with a side of their Texas Heat hot sauce and I always get two so I can eat one right away and then, an hour later, I ride that ride again. There’s a subtle sweetness in that pillowy bun that, paired with the salty sausage and spicy sauce, is frankly habit forming.

Price: Two kolaches are well within our $10 budget.

Health: Not the worst thing in the world, but it is a cheese and meat filled pastry, of which you will want to eat multiple.

Speed: This is a great breakfast to grab on your way out of town. Quick to order and you can eat without mess in a moving vehicle.
